Poodle Toy or Teacups 101
Toy groupThe smallest of the three sizes, the Toy Poodle – which includes the smallest ones, often called “Teacups” – is every bit as intelligent as the others. Their size, however, makes them both more portable and more fragile. The latter makes them a poor match for families with large dogs or rambunctious children, but the former makes them a good urban pet, especially for seniors and empty-nesters.
What we love about Poodle Toy or Teacups
They'll love you even if you name them Fifi.
The Toy Poodle is fun to train, eager to please, and easy to spoil. Beware of giving too many treats to these little dogs, as weight adds up quickly. Puppy socialization is also important, as is teaching a “no bark” cue early. Of all Poodles, the Toy seems especially interested in offering opinions or sounding alarms.

Toy Poodles are considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They have a remarkable ability to learn and excel in various activities, including obedience training, agility, and even performing tricks. Their high intelligence and quick learning make them a joy to train and interact with, and they often excel in activities that challenge their mental abilities.
Poodle Toy or Teacup coat care and colors
The Poodle’s coat is noteworthy for what it doesn’t do: It doesn’t provoke severe sneezing or wheezing in some – but not all – allergy sufferers and it doesn’t shed much. Those qualities have made the Poodle popular for crossbreeding, of course, but the three sizes of Poodle – Toy, Miniature, and Standard – remain consistently popular in their own right. The Poodle comes in a dozen colors, both in solid and patches, the latter called “parti”, although only the solids take ribbons in the show ring.
If allowed to grow, the Poodle coat will "felt" into dozens of long cords, and before that, it will mat. Professional grooming is the norm for Poodles, who are often styled into an easy-care short clip with shaved feet.
