Never a dull moment -- or a laid-back one.

Smaller than other hunting dogs with similar exercise needs, the Vizsla can be a devoted companion for active urban-dwellers, and is an excellent running partner. Intelligent and friendly, the Vizslas are good with children and usually compatible with other family pets. They’re easy to train and eager to please, with a coat requiring no special care.

While the Vizsla is mostly recognized for a sleek, coppery coat, the breed also comes in a wire-haired version. Although the two varieties are closely related, they are considered separate breeds. The Wirehaired was developed a century ago when Hungarian hunters brought in German Wirehaired Pointers to give the Vizsla a coat that would better stand up to harsher elements.

Vizsla coat care and colors

The Vizsla’s coat is easy to care for: Sleek and short, all it needs is weekly brushing and an occasional bath to keep it in good condition. It’s even easy to remember what recognized colors the breed comes in: A single solid, sleek and eye-catching copper. The Vizsla is a decent-sized dog, and that means decent-sized nails that need to be kept short. Avoid wrestling matches with adult dogs by acclimating puppies to having their feet handled and nails clipped. Some dogs better tolerate nail grinding rather than trimming, so experiment with which method works best.

Exercise level

Keeping the Vizla exercised helps avoid boredom and, possibly, destructiveness. An ideal running partner, this breed needs strenuous exercise daily.

Class star

Trainability

The hunting dogs of central Europe have no shortage of intelligence and energy. Regular, strenuous exercise will make it easier for your Vizsla to concentrate.
